Foot retention changes how a bicycle behaves and how fast you can get a foot down. This page covers what a strap does and does not do, how to fit one, how to practice getting out, what to inspect, and when to retire it.

Why this page exists

A strap holds your foot to the pedal. That is the whole point of it, and it is also the reason this page exists. Anything that keeps your foot on the pedal also slows down the moment when you want it off.

Nothing here is complicated. Fit the strap properly, work through the practice in 6.0 somewhere flat and empty, learn what a worn strap looks like, and you will be fine. Skip that and the first time you find out how your release works will be at a red light with a car behind you.

A strap is not safety equipment. It is a control interface, and like any control it has to be learned before it helps you.

What retention does, and what it does not

What it does:

  • Keeps your foot located on the pedal over rough ground, through bumps, and when you are out of the saddle.
  • Lets you pull up and back through the dead part of the stroke instead of only pushing down. On a fixed gear that also means you can use your legs to slow the bike.
  • Makes your foot position repeatable, which is worth more for comfort and knee health than most people expect.
  • Lets you lift the back wheel deliberately, for a curb or a pothole, if you have practiced it.

What it does not do:

  • It is not a brake. Leg pressure on a fixed gear does slow the bike, but your brake and your tires are what stop it, and a strap does nothing for either.
  • It does not make you a better or safer rider. It makes you a rider with a foot that takes longer to free.
  • It does not hold you on the bike in a crash, and it is not designed to. Do not count on it either way.
  • It does not replace judgment about speed, traffic, light or surface.

The honest trade is this. You gain control most of the time and you lose a fraction of a second in the moment you need a foot down. That fraction is the whole risk, and practice is what shrinks it.

Fixed gear: no coasting

On a fixed gear the cranks turn as long as the rear wheel turns. There is no freewheel to let you stop pedaling and think. If the bike is moving, your feet are moving with it.

That changes how you get out of a strap. On a freewheel bike you can stop the pedal wherever you like and take your time. On a fixed gear you have to slow the bike first, time the release to the pedal coming around, and pull your heel out while the crank is still moving. It takes intent. It takes practice. It is not hard once it is a habit, and it is genuinely awkward the first ten times.

Two consequences worth stating plainly. If you get thrown forward, the drivetrain will keep driving your legs, so a strap that is too tight in that moment is working against you. And if the chain, cog or lockring lets go while you are relying on leg braking, you have no brake at all unless a hand brake is fitted. We think you should fit a front brake. Many places also require one by law, so check the law where you ride.

Fitting: snug, not trapped

Fit the strap with the shoes you actually ride in, and fit both sides separately. Feet are not identical and neither are shoes once they have been worn in.

Snug means the strap sits across the widest part of your foot, holds the shoe against the pedal with no forward slide when you pull up, and comes off when you twist your heel outward and back. Trapped means you have to reach down, look at what you are doing, or wrestle the shoe. If it is trapped, it is too tight, no matter how good it feels while pedaling.

Set it so you can pull the foot out without touching the strap with your hand. Then check the other side. Then check both again seated and standing, because a standing foot sits differently in the shoe.

If you cannot reach snug without going through trapped, stop adjusting and change the strap rather than living with it. An unused strap goes back inside 30 days for an exchange or a refund of the product price, and the details are at /legal/shipping-returns. A fit you have to think about is not a fit.

The first few rides

New webbing beds in. Over the first few rides the weave settles, the strap seats itself into the pedal cage, and the whole thing gives up a small amount of slack. It is normal and it stops. It is not the strap failing.

What it means for you is simple. Check the setting again after your first ride, again after a week, and expect to take up a small amount once. After that a strap that keeps loosening is telling you something, and section 8.0 covers what.

Ride the first week somewhere you know. Not the commute, not at night, not in the rain. Learn the release when nothing else is asking for your attention.

Practice getting out

Do this before you ride in traffic. All of it, both feet, in one session. An empty lot, a closed street, a quiet park path. Flat, no cars, no audience.

  • Stationary, one hand on a wall or a post. Get in and out of the right strap twenty times, then the left twenty times. The motion is heel outward and back, then lift. Not straight up. Say it to yourself while you do it.
  • Now with your eyes on the horizon instead of your feet. Twenty more each side. If you cannot do it without looking, the strap is too tight or you need more repetitions. Both are fixable right there.
  • Rolling at walking pace. Release the right foot, put it down, stop. Ten times. Then the left, ten times. Then alternate, and make yourself use the side you like less.
  • Rolling and braking together. Come to a real stop, front brake on, foot out before the bike stops moving, foot down. Ten times each side. This is the one that becomes muscle memory at junctions.
  • Last drill: have someone call out left or right while you roll, and get that foot down. If you are alone, pick the side at the last second yourself. Reacting is the skill, not releasing.

You are done when getting out is one motion, on either side, without looking, while you are braking. Come back and do the whole set again after any change to the strap, the pedals, the shoes or the setting. New shoes are a new bike as far as your feet are concerned.

Inspection

Every-ride checks take about fifteen seconds and you do them with your hands, standing over the bike. Monthly checks mean taking the straps off the pedals and actually looking at them in decent light.

Inspect more often if the bike lives outside, sees winter salt, or does courier miles. Wear tracks miles and grit, not months on a calendar, so a courier strap needs looking at far more often than a weekend one.

When to retire a strap

These are not judgment calls. If you find any of the following, take the strap off the bike and stop using it. Not on the next ride, not for the ride home.

  • Any cut in the webbing, however small, on any face or edge. A cut is a starting point for a tear under load.
  • Any melted, glazed or hardened patch. Heat takes strength out of the fiber well past the part you can see.
  • Stitching that has opened anywhere, even one bar-tack, even if the strap still feels solid in your hand.
  • A tail that no longer holds tension, or that creeps out while you ride and needs resetting every time.
  • Hardware that slips under load, is cracked or bent, or has worn a sharp edge into the webbing running through it.
  • Any repair you made yourself: household thread, glue, tape, a cable tie, a knot tied to take up slack.
  • A strap off a bike that went down hard, when you cannot account for what the webbing took in the impact.

Retired does not mean binned. Send it to us either way, because a strap that stopped working teaches us more than one that still does. If it failed in normal riding, the guarantee at /legal/guarantee covers it: no time limit, no receipt needed, and it follows the strap to a second owner. If you cut it, melted it or repaired it yourself, that falls outside the guarantee and we quote you a fair repair instead. Either way you get a straight answer about what we found.

Do not modify

In plain EnglishChanging the strap yourself changes how it holds, and damage you cause that way is not something we can stand behind.

  • Do not cut it to length. The sewn end is the load path. Cut it and you have removed the part doing the work. If the length is wrong, call before you reach for a knife: an unused strap goes back on the 30-day fit swap, and a ridden one we will quote to re-sew.
  • Do not burn or melt the ends. The bead heat leaves is hard, sharp and abrasive, and it saws at the webbing beside it. It also weakens fiber further up than the scorch mark shows.
  • Do not drill, file or grind a pedal, a cage or a plate to make a strap fit. You are removing metal from a part that is carrying your weight through a small section, and you cannot see the crack you started.
  • Do not substitute hardware. Hardware-store buckles, key rings, split rings, zip ties and bootlace are not made for a load applied by a leg at speed, and they fail without warning rather than gradually.
  • Do not tape, tie or otherwise secure your foot in any way you cannot undo with one motion of your heel. This is the one that hurts people.
  • Do not bleach, solvent-soak, machine-dry or dry a strap on a radiator. Warm water, mild soap, air dry, out of the sun.

If something needs changing, the bench will change it. That is what the bench is for.

Pedals, and what these straps are not

In plain EnglishThey fit platform pedals with a proper mounting point. They are not a clipless system, and at an organized event the equipment rules belong to the organizer, not to us.

Gearhold straps are built for platform pedals with a suitable mounting point: a cage slot, a strap slot, or a purpose-made mounting plate. If your pedal has no such point, the answer is a different pedal, not an improvised one. Call the bench and describe the pedal if you are unsure. We would rather talk for five minutes than have you guess.

  • They are not a clipless system and they are not a substitute for one. Release works by moving your heel, not by a spring mechanism with a release tension.
  • They are not for use with clipless pedals, or with cleated shoes engaged in a clipless mechanism. Two retention systems on one pedal means two things to undo in the moment you have time for none.
  • They are ridden on the track and in races, and the guarantee counts that as normal riding. What we cannot do is clear you to start. Officials and governing bodies set their own equipment rules, they change them, and meeting them on the day is on the rider.
  • They are not built for motorized vehicles of any kind, including electric bikes ridden beyond ordinary bicycle speeds. They are not rigging and not tie-downs, and they are not rated to hold anything other than a foot on a pedal.

Riders this is not for
  • Anyone who cannot comfortably reach the strap and free the foot, seated and standing, on both sides, without help and without looking.
  • Anyone whose balance, reaction time, joint range or strength makes getting a foot down quickly unreliable. If that is a question for you, it is a question for your doctor first and an empty lot second.
  • Children. These are sold to adults, sized for adult feet in adult shoes, and not designed for a child rider on any bicycle.
  • Anyone riding a bike they are not already comfortable on. Learn the bike, then add retention.

If you are buying for someone else, this section is the part to hand them along with the straps.

Wet, ice and grit

Conditions change how the strap behaves and how fast a release happens, and they change your stopping distance at the same time.

  • Wet webbing is slicker against a shoe than dry webbing, and a wet sole slides on a wet pedal. Expect the foot to move a little more, and expect to want a slightly firmer setting than in summer. Firmer, and still inside the release test in 4.0.
  • Cold stiffens webbing and thick gloves make hardware hard to find. Practice the release in winter kit before you need it in winter traffic.
  • Grit and road salt work into the weave and act as an abrasive every time the strap moves against the cage. Rinse with warm water and air dry after salted roads, and inspect more often through the winter.
  • On ice a foot down rarely saves the bike, so loosening the strap buys you nothing. Lower speed, wider lines and earlier braking are the answer, and staying off the ice is a better one.
  • Rain and dark together are the worst case. Ride the conditions you have practiced in, not the ones you rode in last month.

What we test, and what we do not certify

In plain EnglishWe check our own straps. Nobody else checks them, and there is no certificate to send you.

Every strap is pull-tested on the bench before it leaves, and a repaired strap gets the same test again before it goes home. That is us checking our own work, on the strap in front of us.

What it is not is a certificate. There is no standards body that rates bicycle pedal straps, no laboratory report behind ours, and no independent audit of how we build them. Gearhold holds no certification of any kind. If a club, an employer or an event needs one for the kit their riders use, we do not have one to give them.

So read this page as the maker telling you how the thing works and where it stops working. It is not a compliance document and it does not stand in for the rules that apply where you ride.

Assumption of risk

In plain EnglishRiding a bike can hurt you. Straps add one specific risk on top of that, and by riding in them you are choosing to take it on.

Cycling carries risk that no equipment removes. Traffic, surfaces, weather, other people and your own mistakes are all part of it, and they exist with or without a strap on the pedal.

Foot retention adds one more, and it is a specific one worth naming: the time between deciding you need a foot down and having it down is longer than it would be on a bare pedal. Fit and practice shrink that time. Nothing removes it.

When you fit these straps and ride, you are accepting that risk with your eyes open. We have written down what we know: how to fit, how to practice, what to check, when to stop using a strap, and what these are not for. Following it is your call, and so is the ride.

Wear a helmet, fit a front brake, use lights after dark, and ride within your skill and the local law. None of that is us covering ourselves. It is the same advice we would give a friend standing in the workshop.

If something fails

Stop riding. If you were hurt, get looked at before you think about the strap.

Then keep the strap exactly as it is. Do not trim it, do not tidy the threads, do not throw away the broken hardware or the bit that stayed on the pedal. The failure surface is the evidence and we can read it.

Tell us about the near misses too. If something looks wrong on more than one strap out of the same order, that is worth a call before anybody gets hurt.

If we find a problem in a run we have sold, the notice goes on this page, and the shops and fleets who bought that run get a phone call. Be clear about the limit in that: we run no mailing list, hold no customer accounts and keep no database of riders, so there is no way for us to reach everybody directly. If you bought a strap secondhand, this page is the only place a notice will find you.
